Setting up a backyard badminton court
You do not need a gym to play proper badminton. A flat patch of lawn, a rope and the right birdie will do.
Measure the court
A full doubles court is 44 x 20 ft; singles is 44 x 17 ft. In a smaller yard, just keep the two halves equal and mark the lines with string, chalk spray or a few garden stakes.
Hang the net
The official net height is 5 ft 1 inch at the posts. Two stakes or fence posts and a rope work fine for family play; a pop-up net is nicer if you play often.
Pick the birdie for the weather
Outdoors, weight matters more than anything. Weighted nylon birdies with a cork head fly straighter in a breeze. Yellow shows up in bright sun, white in shade, pink at dusk.
Play on after dark
Once the light goes, switch to LED birdies. Keep them dry — water shorts the circuit — and switch them off right after the game to save the sealed battery.
