Keeping chicken water from freezing in winter

A flock can go a day without much, but not without water. Here is how we keep the coop fount liquid when the nights drop below freezing.

Use a heated base, not a lamp

Heat lamps over waterers are a fire risk and waste power. A low-wattage heated base under the fount warms only the water. Our 80W base holds a 3 to 5 gallon fount above freezing on most winter nights.

Set it level and dry

Put the base on a paver or block so it is level and off damp bedding. A tilted fount leaks, and wet litter around a heater is exactly what you do not want.

Keep the cord safe

Plug into a grounded outdoor outlet, run the cord along the wall and out of reach of pecking beaks. Check it for damage when you do the morning round.

Summer is the other half

When it warms up, swap to a closed nipple waterer. It keeps droppings and bedding out of the water and refills itself from the hose through a float valve.
